As someone who loves to read, I really wanted to make sure that my kids found the same enjoyment in flipping the pages. Call me crazy, but I signed my oldest daughter up for the summer reading program at our local library when she was only nine months old.
Yes, I know she may not have totally understood the process, but the program really got the ball rolling. Since that moment, we have been borrowing piles of library books, and we have come across quite a few favorites.
With an ever-growing list of must reads, this list includes our current top 15.

Must Read Children’s Books
A Lion in Paris
A Lion in Paris is an amazingly illustrated pick for all children. The book reassures children that they have a place in the world. Just like the lion in Paris, they too can explore the world without worrying that they are being judged.
Dragons Love Tacos
Once you read this book, you will never think about a taco without thinking about a dragon! Kids love this book, and they will pull this one off of the shelf more often than not.
Dragons Love Tacos 2
For another funny and constantly entertaining read, try out Dragons Love Tacos 2. The sequel will not disappoint you!
I Like Myself
If we could all apply this book to our own lives, we would be a lot happier and a lot less concerned with what others think. This book is exactly the self-esteem boost that kids and perhaps adults need too.
Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast
A food fight gone right! Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are quite the duo, and it will delight you to read this thriller any day of the week. To be honest, Josh Funk’s entire series is so entertaining.

The Case of the Stinky Stench
Who wouldn’t love a book with a character like Inspector Croissant? Maybe you too have struggled to figure out the fridge stench. Your investigation may not be as much fun as this search party, but either way, your kids will be interested to find out the cause.
Mission Defrostable
Funk’s third book in the series takes a normal kitchen appliance issue and makes it an adventure for Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast. The crew must figure out how to defrost the fridge before all the breakfast food goes bad.
Short and Sweet
With Josh Funk mastering the series, you will wonder whether Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast will become adults once again too? You may even want to harp on telling your kids that they too need to stay little a little longer. I am always begging my Sadie to please stay little! Anyway, Baron Von Waffle and Professor Biscotti keep you engaged throughout the struggle to get Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast back to normal.
On The Night You Were Born
I don’t know what it is, but this book just makes everyone feel even more loved when reading it. Your kids will shout their names as they grow older reading this beautiful selection by Nancy Tillman.

The Story of Ferdinand
Fall in love with Ferdinand from the first page. The book is definitely a classic tale of being proud of who you are. The story is simple and sweet, and all will want to gather around to hear it over and over again.
This Is Sadie
I ran across this book a few years ago as I was searching for books with Sadie’s name, and it shockingly surprised me at how wonderful it really is. If you want to inspire your kids to be creative, this book will be their inspiration to use their imaginations. Sadie, the main character, goes around creating stories from anything she sees, which really is like my Sadie.
Uni The Unicorn
Each night of quarantine, we read this book with Sadie, and by the end, she was reading it to us. Uni believes little girls are real even though she is told they are just imaginary. The book is quite the creative twist to believing in unicorns. No matter who is reading this, the book is instantly engaging.
The Wonderful Things You Will Be
As we can only imagine what our kids will become one day, we can hope they follow their own paths. With this book, the journey starts off with exploration and following your own desires. Kids will be inspired and enjoy the idea of endless possibilities.
