How To Make Cheap Garland Look Expensive
Of course, there are many ways to make garland look gorgeous on a budget, but here are the steps for this particular style. If you follow the steps, please share your holiday decor photos. Happy crafting!
Step 1: Gather the Materials
You can purchase these materials at the Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Target.
You’ll need three strands of garland from the Dollar Tree, which will only cost you three dollars. Isn’t that amazing!
Also, you’ll need to purchase one box of pine cone ornaments from the Dollar General. If you can’t find these, you could just hot glue pine cones into the garland Of course, these ornaments make the process a lot easier.
Additionally, you can also buy snow spray at the Dollar Store or Dollar General. I purchased the one in the photo from Target, which is called Santa Sno Blower.
For additions to the materials, you could purchase lights to mix into the garland. You can find them anywhere. The Dollar Store definitely has them too.

Step 2: Add The Pine Cone Ornaments
Once you open the first strand of garland, add the pine cone ornaments to the garland. You can space it out evenly and be sure to cover the entire strand.
These pine cones from the Dollar General are very convenient. However, if you can’t find these ornaments, you could just super glue pine cones onto the garland as well.
You could also use baubles instead of pine cones. Depending on your holiday color scheme, you could select some that match or accent your decor. This is also another touch that makes your dollar garland look even better. Why spend a fortune when you can add a little love to dollar garland?
Step 3: Twist Garland
Then, using the three strands of garland, one with the pine cones, twist them all together for a fuller look. After all, this post is all about how to make cheap garland look expensive.
It is rather easy to twist it, and after you’re finished, you can fluff it all out. You’ll love the results of these budget friendly method.

Step 4: Spray the Garland
Then, spray the garland. No matter what you do, I would spray the garland outside, so that you can avoid ruining anything inside of your home. Even though you could do it inside, I wouldn’t. It would be my luck that I’d miss and ruin a piece of furniture or the flooring.
So be it 20 degrees outside or not, I’ll be out front spraying the garland. 🙂
Also, when you do go to spray the garland be sure to apply it lightly. You can always add more if needed. I think in this instance less is more. If you over do it, the garland is going to look cheap and tacky.
Additionally, be sure to wait at least four hours before bringing it into your home.
Step 5: Decorate with the Garland
For this garland, I also added in some lights. I had these lights on hand from a Target purchase last year. Here’s the link for the battery-operated string lights if you’d like to get them as well.
The lights aren’t necessary, but they do make this garland look beautiful. Plus, the battery operated lights are so much more convenient too. The less cords the better!
How Did Christmas Garland Become a Tradition?
So might wonder, how did this Christmas garland become so popular? I just had to find out where this decor idea came from.
As I decorate for the holiday, there is just something nostalgic about placing the garland around my home that just makes the season. Of course, my garland and even my tree are synthetic, but I love the smell of real garland. Due to allergies, we can’t have it in the house, but there is nothing like that fresh scent. My gram and mom always have the real garland, which reminds me of waiting for Santa as a little girl.
For someone who doesn’t love clutter, I do love garland everywhere. This garland craft gives you that minimalist approach, but it still sets the mood for the season.
