Fall gardening ideas just set the tone for the season. As you walk out the front door or pull into your driveway, you can feel the fall with your floral selections. Check out these ideas to see if any work for your vision. This post is all about fall gardening ideas.
Enjoy your garden this fall when you plant some of these gorgeous flowers. I started gardening in the fall for the mums, but then I realized there were so many other beautiful options out there.
Remember, I am a newbie, and these are just suggestions. I have learned about gardening through trial and error. Believe me, there have been several errors.
My sister purchased my daughters the book We Are the Gardeners by Joanna Gaines, and it is quite the inspiration we all need to see our vision through.
Just try it, and you might just become quite the gardener. When you start your vision, send photos. I’d love to see your ideas.

Fall Gardening Ideas
Each of the following gardening ideas includes the best zone, sunlight, and watering requirements. To find out your zone, check out this site.
Asters
Asters are quite a simple beauty and are normally a shade of purple or blue. Last year I over-watered my aster flowers, and it was quite the disaster. This year, I know that I just need to water the base.
Zones: 3-8
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: Water the base of the flower, and water regularly.
Autumn Sage
Just by sheer luck, I ran into this gorgeous flowering plant at a local nursery. These have to be my lowest maintenance gardening selections so far. Even after a week away, the autumn sage flowers looked gorgeous. Who doesn’t love a low maintenance flower?
Zones: 6-9
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: Water regularly, but not excessively.
Fall Gardening Ideas
Cone Flowers
After admiring my friend Amanda’s cone flowers, I knew this had to be on my list of gardening ideas. They are just tall and gorgeous. My daughter Sadie is in love with them too.
Zones: 3-8
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: Water regularly in well-drained soil.
Dinner Plate Hibiscus
Speaking of Amanda, she suggested I plant these easy going hibiscus flowers this fall. They just look lovely and add a soft touch of pinks or reds to your vision.
Zones: 4-9
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: They require plenty of water at first, and then regular watering once bloomed.
Fall Gardening Ideas
Mums
My first fall gardening love is definitely mums. I just love them so much, and they are fairly easy to take care of. My only tip is to make sure that you plant them far enough into the ground so that they do not snap once they grow. Last year, I didn’t plant a few of them deep enough, and the plant cracked in half at the base. Of course, I saved the halves and put them in planters, but I got another mum plant replacement, too.
Zones: 4-9
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: They should be watered regularly, and mulching these plants helps with moisture control.
Ornamental Peppers
Unfortunately, these are not in my zone, but they are such a fun plant to grow if you are in zones 9-11. They are so colorful and would be an impressive addition to any gardening bed.
Zones: 9-11
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: They do not like that much water, and it is best to wait for the soil to dry in between waterings.
Fall Gardening Ideas
Pansies
For another beautiful selection, pick pansies for your fall garden this year. They are such an interesting flower as they look like they have litle faces. They also remind me of the move Alice in Wonderland when they are singing. Oh, what fun!
Zones: 4-8
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: They should at least be watered every other day.
Sunflowers
Every year one of our neighbors has gorgeous sunflowers blooming. Sadie and I wait for these huge sunflowers to bloom to admire their beauty. What an amazing flower! They are just perfect, and they are surely going to look good anywhere you plant them. Well, as long as you put them in the sun.
Zones: 4-9
Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun
Water Requirements: They need to be watered regularly, but be sure to plant them in well-draining soil.
