These decluttering ideas do not need to be used at once. You can slowly implement them into your day-to-day routine. They are just some things that I do to cut down on the clutter in my daughters’ room.
Space Bag Storage
So I have always loved space bags. Really, I fell in love with space bags in college. I can still remember my dad looking at me like I was nuts. I was sitting on bag after bag of clothing, smashing it down while my mom was suctioning the bag with the vacuum. It was quite the scene.
Anyhow, back to the cluttered bedroom issues. You can use these space bags to store so many of your kids items.
For instance, use space bags to store summer items such as swim hats, swimsuits, coverups, etc.
Then, use space bags to collect items that no longer fit. Keep one in the closet so that you can just stick the clothes right in the bag.
By the way, only use a space bag for items that don’t fit it you plan to pass these clothes down to other kids in the family. If not, then always donate the clothes that no longer fit. You can just keep a large tote bag nearby or hang it up using a 3m hook to keep clothes organized until you drop them off.

This way you can save space, and you can either store these bags in the closet or under the bed.
How To Sort Toys
Okay, so with sorting toys, this can get a little tricky depending on the toys you’re working with. For example, we can categorize the toys my girls play with into stuffed animals, figurines, and battery-operated toys. Therefore, I can keep a three-bin organizer to store and easily separate these things.

For items that have sentimental meaning, you could use display shelves to keep these items off the floor and out in the open.
Try to avoid keeping sentimental items that are just sitting behind other random items in a closet. Instead, try to use these items as decor.
For instance, for my daughter’s baptism, my mother gave her a beautiful set of pearls to wear. They are in this pretty little blue box. So instead of just throwing them in a drawer, we display the box on a shelf.

Over the Door Storage
Using over the door storage options is a great way to declutter a bedroom. These storage ideas allow you to get clutter off of the floor and out of over-packed drawers.
You can use over the door storage to keep your kids toiletries, shoes, hair accessories, toys, dolls, etc.

Bed Storage Ideas
With bed storage ideas, there are a few options to keep items organized and decluttered.
For starters, you could use bed lifts so to keep items under the bed. I have done this several times. They also work great for lifting other furniture for additional storage ideas too.
The other option is to get under the bed storage bins. This is great for keeping seasonal items stored. I use the under the bed storage bin to keep extra diapers and wipes as of now.
Another great way to use bed storage is to just get a bed with built-in storage. This is also a nice idea if you have kids sharing rooms. They can keep their items secure and in their own areas under the bed. When my girls are out of toddler beds, I will get a bed with storage for each of them. I really like the one from Home Depot that is under $200.
Keys to Maintaining a Decluttered Kids Room
Maintaining a decluttered kids room can be overwhelming at times. Life happens and you can’t do anything about it. That’s the truth, and it isn’t the end of the world if it gets messy. Let’s remember kids will remember you hugging them more than how often their room was cleaned. So with that said, you will rest easy with these maintenance tips.
There are three key rules to keep a kids room decluttered.
First, make sure that you keep an empty bag in the closet or nearby to toss clothes that don’t fit.
Second, take time once every 3-4 months to donate toys. Kids sometimes can be overwhelmed by all the choices and it isn’t bad to just minimize their toy selection. I try to do this every three months. I do it right before birthdays and the holidays.
Third, try to get your kids involved in the daily cleanup. Start with the bed. Yes, have them make their beds in the morning, and put away their toys and clothes each night. They will feel accomplished by helping you, and they too will appreciate a decluttered room.
In the meantime, enjoy the times that you have to clean up the dolls and blocks and dinosaurs. These moments will fly by. Enjoy it all!
