Do you ever lift the lid of your grill, and think wow I should probably clean this? Then, you cook your food, and you just shut it again to continue repeating the same thought process?
Well, season after season, I did the same thing. Until I just couldn’t take it anymore. Finally, I realized that neglecting the dirty grill was affecting the taste of the food and the total cook time as well.
With all of that crustiness, the grill was never going to last, and our food wasn’t getting any better without a good cleaning. Nonetheless, these simple steps will lead you in the right direction, and you will easily be able to clean your grill.

Cleaning a Grill
Step 1 – Prep for Cleaning a Grill
First, place a tarp down under the grill during the cleaning process. This way the dirt and residue do not end up all over your deck or porch area.
If possible, try to keep a garden hose within reach of the grill to make life easier during this cleanse.
Then, preheat the grill on high heat for at least 15 minutes.
When you preheat the oven, the leftover food particles on the racks break down and can easily be removed during the cleaning process.
Next, for your safety, make sure that you turn off the grill and unplug the propane tank as well.
Additionally, make sure to go directly into the cleaning process once you have completed the preheating step.
Step 2 – Cleaning Grill Grates
For this process, start with a mixture of water and two cups of vinegar in a large bucket. In essence, this creates a natural cleaner for your grill grates.
Next, using the Grill Art Grill Brush and Scraper, dip the brush in the cleaning solution and scrub all of the grates. With this particular tool, the food particles will easily come off with little effort.
Not to worry, since the grill just did a preheat, there will be steam coming from the grates as you scrub the dirt off of them. This is normal and creates a steam cleaning process. By preheating the oven, it loosens the gunk from the grates.
Once you finish the scrubbing, dry off all of the grates.
Then, take a cloth and cooking oil, and lightly coat your grill racks to protect them during the season. When you place the oil onto the grates, you are creating a barrier and thus, preventing a crusty buildup from appearing in the future.
Step 3 – Cleaning Heat Deflectors
Next, remove all of the heat deflectors from the grill. The deflectors are beneath the grill grates. Normally, you can just take these right off.
Furthermore, these plates can also be scrubbed with the Grill Art Grill Brush and Scraper and dipped into the cleaning solution for a deep clean.
Also, be sure to dry off all of these pieces with an old cloth once you are done scrubbing them.
Moreover, at this point, you may want to start over with another bucket of clean water and two more cups of vinegar. Of course, no one will judge you if you keep cleaning with the same water either.
Step 4 – Clean Grill Burners
For this step, you will need to use a screwdriver to unscrew your grill burners.
Once you have all of the burners out of the grill, scrub each burner individually. With these burners, you can use the vinegar water combo as well. Make sure to use a Scrub Daddy to ensure that you don’t scratch or damage the burners.
Also, be sure to pay special attention to the holes within the burners. If you see a lot of debris there, use a toothbrush to scrub that small space.
Then, rinse the burners off using a hose. Stream the water between the burners to make sure that you clean all of those little crevices.
Lastly, dry all of the burners with an old towel.
Step 5 – Cleaning a Grill Cook Box
For this step, you are going to be glad that you put a tarp under the grill. Also, put an extra bucket directly under the opening of the cook box.
Then, using the Grill Art Grill Brush and Scraper, scrub the entire box off, wipe with the vinegar water mix, and dry.
With this cook box, you may even want to use S.O.S Steel Wool Soap Pads to scrub the tougher spots clean. I just love these little pads, and when you finish, you can just dispose of them too.
Then, wipe all down the cook box with a clean wet cloth. Again, you can dry this off with a towel as well.
Step 6 – Reassemble the Grill
Now, you can just reassemble all of your clean items, and you are just one more step away from the start of the grilling season. I bet you can smell the burgers!
Make sure to put the burners back in properly, and the heat deflectors back on top.
Now, your grill is almost ready to go.
Step 7 – Clean the Outside of the Grill
Lastly, clean the outside parts of your grill with an easy diy solution.
Using the same solution for stainless steel, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 2/3 cup water.
After mixing the solution, you can use the same go-to cleaning cloth I use for my windows and light fixtures. This way you are sure to not scratch the front of your grill.
Finally, you have one beautiful grill to start your season off right!
Keeping Your Grill Clean
Since you have put all of this work into cleaning your grill, follow a few steps throughout the season to ensure that your grill remains clean.
Furthermore, clean the grill with the Grill Art Grill Brush and Scraper after each use. This way you will avoid buildup and your food will continue to cook evenly.
Also, to keep your grill looking clean, try to protect it with a cover.
Additionally, you can put a mat under your grill. In reality, this is not to protect your grill, but to protect the area under your grill.
Moreover, this particular mat is made for gas or charcoal grills. You will be happy with this mat, and you will worry less about spilling anything while grilling.
Schedule Your First Barbeque
Once you have finished your seven simple steps, you are ready to plan for that first barbeque.
Not only will your grill look fabulous, but your food will be cooked to perfection.
Enjoy and grill on!
