You may think, why even bother organizing all of those little gadgets and many tools in a kitchen drawer? No one even sees the insides of your kitchen drawers. Why spend the time maintaining the kitchen drawers when there are obviously other issues in the house to maintain?
Well, to be honest, I totally get that it seems ridiculous, but in reality, having your kitchen drawers organized or at least keeping some order to the utensil chaos, allows you to cook and prepare foods without wasting all of those precious moments trying to find the garlic press or the meat tenderizer or the avocado opener or the can opener or the veggie peeler and so on.
When you have a spot for all of these little odds and ends then you don’t have to take time to find these items while you are preparing your dishes.
Here are two steps to help organize the kitchen drawers that will save you time in the long run and will get you closer to enjoying your next savory dish.
Step 1: Sort Your Items
First, go through all of your different items and if you haven’t used them in the last 2 years, then you probably are not going to use them anytime soon. Please try to donate these unused items. As for the items that are dysfunctional, toss them in the trash because at this point they are just taking up valuable storage space.
Step 2: Simplify Your Space
Next, purchase an item to divide your drawer space appropriately, so that you can utilize every square inch of each drawer. There are plenty of options out there for you to try. If you purchase these items and they don’t quite fit, they may work in other parts of your home. For instance, in your bathroom drawers or your desk drawers at work. These little dividers can be great additions to any drawer, not just for the odds and ends in the kitchen.
Below you will see three options to organize your items. The first is an expandable tray option that gives you a more orderly look.
The next option features interlocking bins. This option gives you a chance to move bins around to fit your needs.
The last option is adjustable dividers which ensure that every square inch of your drawer space will be utilized.
Another option is to repurpose a tray that you may already have around your house.
I actually reused my daughter’s Melissa and Doug Doll Set Tray as a kitchen drawer organizer. With a little soap and water, I cleaned the tray and then used spray paint to change the color of the organizer. I used a top coat to make sure that it doesn’t chip.
The Rust-Oleum Protective Enamel Matte Clear Enamel Spray Paint is a great finishing touch for all spray paint projects. I always use it so that no matter what surface you spray, it doesn’t smear or chip any time you put anything on it.
Plus the red paint just makes it look a little nicer when I open up the drawer.
It is Now Perfect – Close the Drawer
I hope that once you sort your items, find spots for all of these little treasures, and get them tucked away, that you can get down to making those delicious dishes without the frustration of locating the missing peeler or more importantly the misplaced cookie scoop; now, that would be a true dilemma.
Enjoy the sorting process, and I hope that you can now get a handle on that kitchen drawer debacle.
